Tooth Extractions in York, NE

Sometimes a tooth just can’t be saved. When that happens, removing the tooth can be the best way to get rid of pain or infection and protect your other teeth.

At York Dental Arts, Dr. Jesse Carr and Dr. Lauren Herzberg perform tooth extractions in our office. We will examine the tooth, talk through your options, and make sure you understand what to expect before we get started.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Needed?

We always want to save a natural tooth when we can. However, sometimes extraction is the best option.

A tooth may need to be removed because of:

  • Severe decay that has left the tooth beyond repair
  • Infection that cannot be successfully treated
  • A broken or fractured tooth that cannot be restored
  • Crowding or a tooth that is not coming in properly
  • Wisdom teeth that are causing problems

Before recommending an extraction, we’ll discuss whether there is a way to save the tooth and what your options are.

What Is a Tooth Extraction Like?

We will first numb the area around the tooth so you don’t feel the extraction. Once you are numb, we’ll carefully remove the tooth.

Some extractions are very straightforward, while others may take a little more time depending on the tooth and its condition.

Before you leave, we’ll give you instructions for taking care of the extraction site and letting it heal properly.

What Can I Expect After an Extraction?

Some soreness, swelling, or tenderness is normal after having a tooth removed. Most patients are able to manage this with the instructions we provide and over-the-counter pain medication when appropriate.

For the first few days, you’ll want to be careful with the extraction site and follow your post-operative instructions. We’ll explain what to eat, how to care for the area, and what to avoid while you’re healing.

If you have questions or something doesn’t seem right during your recovery, give us a call.

Are Tooth Extractions Painful?

We numb the area thoroughly before beginning the extraction. You should feel pressure during the procedure, but you shouldn’t feel sharp pain.

It’s normal to have some discomfort once the numbness wears off, but we’ll give you instructions to help make your recovery as easy as possible.

How Long Does a Tooth Extraction Take?

The time needed depends on the tooth and how difficult it is to remove. Many extractions can be completed in a relatively short appointment.

We’ll let you know what to expect when we examine the tooth and before we begin treatment.

What Happens After a Tooth Extraction?

Once a tooth is removed, we’ll also talk with you about what comes next. Depending on the location of the tooth and your needs, replacing it may be important for your long-term oral health.

Options may include a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture. Not every missing tooth needs to be replaced in the same way, so we’ll help you determine what makes sense for you.
